Your organisation’s perspective

A view of governance, from the people responsible.

Who should answer?

People who understand your organisation’s AI responsibilities and practices: an owner, senior leader or colleague responsible for risk, compliance or the way AI is used. Draw on the knowledge of relevant colleagues where needed. The questions concern the organisation, not a test of someone’s personal AI skills.

Answer what happens today

Describe the arrangements you actually have, rather than those you plan to introduce. Use “Don’t know” where you’re unsure. Uncertainty about who owns a decision or how a rule works can itself be useful to explore.

For organisations of different sizes

You can take the index if you work for yourself as well as on behalf of a larger organisation. Consider the questions in the context of your own work and responsibilities.

Your report

What is in place. What happens in practice.

Your answers inform two headline measures: Policy and Practice. They describe your organisation’s reported arrangements. There is no single combined score.

Policy

Ownership and accountability, rules and acceptable use, data protection, and suppliers and obligations.

Practice

Tools and shadow AI, human oversight, incidents and correction, and transparency and people.

The detail behind your findings

The report breaks these measures into eight areas, helping you see where responsibilities, guidance or day-to-day controls may need closer attention. Read the findings alongside your own evidence and knowledge of the organisation.

A starting point for review

The index is in Research beta. Its findings are indicative and based on the answers provided. It is not an independent audit, legal advice or certification of compliance.

A complementary perspective

The AI Adoption Index explores organisational readiness and AI use. It can sit alongside Governance findings, but the two indices answer different questions.

Put your findings to use

Agree what needs attention. Review what changes.

Use your report to discuss how your organisation makes decisions about AI and whether its arrangements work in practice. Choose a few priorities that fit your activities and responsibilities.

1 · Discuss the gaps

Bring together the people responsible for relevant decisions. Explore unclear ownership, rules people cannot find, or checks that are not consistently followed.

2 · Put changes into practice

Give each priority an owner. Update guidance, explain what people need to do and allow time to see how the changes work in everyday situations.

3 · Return to review

Repeat the index when you have changes worth reviewing. Consider the findings alongside evidence of what has happened, rather than relying on a score alone.

Check the index version and compare findings with what happens at work, not scores alone. How to use Research beta results.

Your organisation’s information

Clear about access. Sharing by choice.

Your organisation’s findings

The AI Governance Index captures answers about your organisation’s arrangements. Its report is intended for the people authorised to access your organisation’s findings.

Sharing with The AI Lab

Taking the index through The AI Lab does not give us blanket access to your organisation’s information. Your organisation controls the sharing of named results through Benchmark Lab’s sharing controls. You can use your report without buying training or advice.

Grouped findings

Eligible responses may contribute to grouped findings, subject to Benchmark Lab’s participation rules and minimum response thresholds. Grouped findings are distinct from sharing your organisation’s named report.

Separate from personal results

The Personal AI Index explores individuals’ own experience of AI at work. Taking the Governance Index does not give your organisation access to anyone’s individual personal answers or results.
